A Survey of Smoking Habits and Attitudes toward Smoking among Residents in Rural Area


Abstract
This survey was carried out in order to find out rural Koreans¢¥ smoking habits and attitudes toward smoking in Bongyang Myon, Euiseong Gun, Kyungpook Province through questionnaire interview by calling on 1,052 residents in age over 20 from September 1, to October 31, 1975. The mean smoking rate among respondents was 81.5 per cent in male and 33.3 per cent in female. Socioeconomic strata being classified into upper, middle, and low classes, the smoking rate of the upper class showed 69.9 per cent, that of the middle 69.6 per cent, and that of the low 82.2 per cent. Comparison of the smoking rates of the religious groups revealed some differences; The unreligious group showed the highest rate in percentage (79.1 %), Followed by the Roman Catholic group (78.6%) and by the Buddhist group(74.0%), and the Protestant group was found to be the lowest group (40.0%) . The respondents were classified into laborers, farmers, salariates, salesmen and the unemployed by their vocations. And the average smoking rates of them in turn were 87.2, 76.5, 72.2, 69.1, and 55.1 per cent respectively. Among the current smokers, 82.9 per cent in male and 79.1 per cent in female believed that something was hazard to their health. And 57.5 per cent of both sexes did that morbidity is due to smoking, 57.3 per cent of males, and 59.4 per cent of females respectively. The average smoking amounts of cigarettes per day was 12.0 (12.5 in male and 8.2 in female). About 36 per cent of the current smokers started in smoking under the age of 20 and 84.4 per cent under the age 25 in male, but 27. 0 per cent under 30 and 82.3 per cent under 45 in female. Of the current smokers, the rates of 62.2 per cent in male and 64.4 per cent in female wanted to antismoking. And the rates of 47. 8 per cent in male and 32. 2 percent t in female had experienced antismoking. Among the current nonsmokers, 47. 2 per cent in male did not start smoking owing to health hazard and 51.6 per cent in female owing to damage of appearance. And the rates of nonsmokers who have smoked were 37.9 per cent in male and 13.3 per cent in female.
